Newcastle United Injury Crisis Deepens as Anthony Elanga Update Leaves Matthias Jaissle Waiting

Elanga missed Newcastle's 4-1 defeat at Leeds United and was subsequently sent for an MRI scan to establish the extent of his problem.

Jaissle admitted he was still waiting for clarity on the winger's condition before Newcastle's meeting with Hull City, while making it clear how important Elanga has become to his plans.

The Newcastle boss described the Sweden international as a “key strength” of the squad and said the club hoped the injury would not prove serious.

Elanga absence adds to Newcastle's problems

The timing was particularly frustrating for Newcastle.

Elanga had made an impressive start to life under Jaissle, contributing two goals in his first five appearances across all competitions before the injury kept him out of the Leeds defeat.

His pace and direct running have been important components of the way Jaissle wants Newcastle to play.

Without him, the manager was forced to consider alternatives, with Jacob Murphy one of the players capable of filling the position.

Jaissle acknowledged that Newcastle would have to solve the problem differently if Elanga was unavailable, while insisting he had confidence in the other players in his squad.

Newcastle's injury list keeps growing

Elanga's problem was far from the only issue facing Jaissle.

Amar Dedić was unavailable with a hamstring problem, while Jacob Ramsey was also sidelined. Nico González was following concussion protocols after being withdrawn against Leeds, while Joelinton, William Osula, Dan Burn and goalkeeper Ewen Jaouen were also among the absentees around this period.

Jaissle admitted that there were no injured players expected to return for the Hull fixture.

“It doesn't look that good,” he said when discussing the availability situation, although he hoped the international break would allow the list to become shorter.

That left Newcastle facing a particularly awkward period with limited senior options.

Jaissle gets response despite depleted squad

The encouraging development for Newcastle came after the concern was first raised.

Despite the absences, the Magpies responded to their heavy defeat at Leeds by beating Hull City 2-1 at St James' Park.

Joe Willock opened the scoring inside the opening minutes before Lewis Hall doubled Newcastle's advantage.

Hull pulled one back through Mohamed-Ali Cho and pushed for an equaliser, but Newcastle held on for three points.

The scale of the selection problems was evident in Newcastle's matchday squad.

Tino Livramento, Dedić and González joined an already lengthy injury list, while Osula, Joelinton, Elanga, Burn and Jaouen also remained unavailable. Newcastle's bench contained largely teenagers and only one outfield player who had previously started a league match for the club.

The international break comes at the right time

For Jaissle, the timing could hardly be more useful.

Newcastle now have an extended period before their next league fixture, giving several injured players an opportunity to recover.

The manager had already hoped the injury list would be shorter after the international break, and the Hull victory means Newcastle enter that period with eight points from their opening five Premier League matches.

Elanga remains one of the most important cases to monitor.

Newcastle will want greater clarity over the winger's recovery before the squad returns to competitive action, particularly given how highly Jaissle values his pace and attacking threat.

For now, though, Newcastle have shown they can navigate the injury crisis.

The bigger test will come when the schedule resumes and Jaissle discovers exactly how many of his missing players are ready to return.
