Arsenal had won their opening four league matches and seven consecutive games in all competitions before travelling to the Amex Stadium.

The champions could not consistently win their individual battles, struggled to play through the press and made costly mistakes when they did have possession.

Arteta's warning was therefore about more than one bad afternoon.

He knows Arsenal cannot afford to repeat those errors when the Premier League's biggest rivals are waiting to capitalise.

The 3-0 scoreline will dominate the headlines, but Arteta's comments have made the underlying issue clear: Arsenal were not beaten simply because Brighton played well.
