Jürgen Klopp Makes Germany U-Turn as Lennart Karl and Karim Adeyemi Swap Places

Germany have made a late change to Jürgen Klopp’s plans for the upcoming Nations League fixtures, with Bayern Munich youngster Lennart Karl and Barcelona forward Karim Adeyemi swapping places between the two squads.

Karl was originally scheduled to be involved in the first part of Germany’s international camp, but minor muscular discomfort has prompted a change in his schedule.

According to Bavarian Football Works, Karl will instead remain in Munich initially and work individually before joining up with Germany for the later matches. The change has been described as a precaution and part of workload management rather than a withdrawal from the squad.

That means Adeyemi has been brought forward and will now be available for Germany’s opening Nations League fixtures against the Netherlands and Greece.

Karl’s Germany plans changed

Karl’s inclusion in Klopp’s plans was already one of the notable developments after the new Germany boss selected an expanded 44-man group for four Nations League matches.

Klopp split the players into two groups, with each initially scheduled to cover two games. Karl was due to be involved in the first group before the late adjustment.

The Bayern midfielder’s minor muscular problem has now altered that plan.

Sky Sport reports that Karl will first continue his individual programme in Munich following an agreement between Bayern and the German Football Association, before joining the national team for the later part of the international break.

Karl is therefore still firmly part of Klopp’s plans. He is now expected to be involved for Germany’s matches against Serbia on 1 October and Greece on 4 October.

Adeyemi gets an earlier opportunity

Adeyemi’s schedule has moved in the opposite direction.

The Barcelona attacker was originally expected to feature in the second group, but he has now arrived earlier and will replace Karl for the Netherlands and Greece fixtures.

Germany’s decision is particularly notable because Klopp’s 44-player system was designed around managing a demanding run of four matches in just 11 days. The DFB has cited workload management as the reason for the swap.

For Adeyemi, that creates an earlier opportunity to work with Klopp and compete for a place in the new Germany setup.

The squad switch also highlights how unusual Klopp’s first Nations League selection has been.

Rather than relying on one conventional squad across the entire international window, the new Germany coach divided 44 players into two groups for the four matches.

The approach gives Klopp the opportunity to manage workloads while also assessing a wider group of players.

Karl and Adeyemi have now effectively exchanged positions within that plan, rather than being added to or removed from the overall squad.

For Bayern, the immediate priority is Karl’s fitness. For Germany, the alteration means Adeyemi gets his chance earlier while Karl remains involved in the longer-term plan.

The next step will be to see how Karl responds to his individual programme in Munich and what role Klopp gives him when he eventually joins the national team.
