Arsenal Stars Savaged After Brighton Humbling as £75m Signing Singled Out

The Gunners arrived at the Amex having won their opening four Premier League matches and all seven of their competitive games this season.

They left the south coast with their perfect league record gone and serious questions being asked about a performance that fell dramatically below the standards Arsenal have established.

Pascal Gross, Charalampos Kostoulas and Chema Andres were all on target as Brighton produced an outstanding display to dismantle the reigning champions.

The final scoreline arguably flattered Arsenal, with Brighton creating numerous opportunities and controlling large periods of the contest.

Bruno Guimaraes singled out after Arsenal collapse

Among the Arsenal players criticised was Guimaraes, who was withdrawn in the 59th minute after struggling to impose himself on the match.

Former Premier League striker Troy Deeney was particularly critical of the £75 million summer signing, arguing that Arteta should have replaced him at half-time.

Guimaraes had produced a much stronger display in Arsenal's previous league victory at Sunderland, but he was unable to reproduce that influence against Brighton.

His substitution came shortly after the interval, with Mikel Merino replacing him as Arteta attempted to change the balance of his midfield.

The criticism of Guimaraes reflects a wider problem for Arsenal rather than simply one player's display, however.

Arteta admits Arsenal failed to meet basic standards

Arteta did not attempt to hide behind the result after the match.

The Arsenal manager said Brighton deserved their victory and acknowledged that his team had failed to do the basics correctly for long periods.

That assessment was particularly revealing because Arsenal have built their success under Arteta around intensity, organisation and control.

Against Brighton, those qualities were largely absent.

The hosts' pressing repeatedly unsettled Arsenal during the opening stages, while Brighton were able to find space around the Gunners' midfield and defensive structure.

Gross was given too much room for the opener, while Kostoulas was also afforded the opportunity to shoot from distance for Brighton's second.

The third arrived after the interval when Chema Andres rose to meet Gross' corner.

Arsenal's attacking stars also struggle

The criticism was not restricted to Guimaraes.

Bukayo Saka was unable to provide the attacking spark Arsenal needed, while Kai Havertz also struggled to make a decisive impact as Brighton's defensive organisation frustrated the visitors.

Arteta eventually turned to 16-year-old Max Dowman, but the youngster could not change the outcome.

Arsenal managed just two shots on target, while Brighton's aggressive approach prevented the visitors from establishing the control they normally seek.

It was a particularly stark contrast to Arsenal's opening weeks of the campaign.

A warning rather than a season-defining result

The defeat does not erase Arsenal's excellent start, but it provides Arteta with plenty to address during the international break.

The champions had won nine consecutive Premier League matches stretching back to last season, while Saturday's defeat was their first league loss of the current campaign.

More significantly, Arsenal conceded three goals in a Premier League match for the first time since Brighton beat them by the same scoreline in May 2023.

That makes the nature of the performance particularly notable.

Brighton did not merely edge Arsenal in a tight contest. They repeatedly exposed weaknesses in the champions' structure and intensity.

Arteta now has the international break to analyse exactly why his team looked so unlike themselves.

The Arsenal manager has already made it clear that the performance was not good enough.
