Tottenham Make Giorgio Scalvini Transfer Move as Atalanta Hand Spurs Major Blow

Tottenham Hotspur are continuing to monitor Giorgio Scalvini despite the Atalanta defender agreeing a new long-term contract with the Serie A club.

Spurs made contact over a possible deal for the Italy international during the summer, with reports now suggesting that their interest has not disappeared after Atalanta secured his future until 2031.

According to TEAMtalk, Tottenham and Chelsea both held discussions over Scalvini, while Manchester City and Manchester United have also maintained an interest in the highly rated centre-back. No formal bid has been reported at this stage.

Tottenham still keeping tabs on Scalvini

The 22-year-old has been regarded as one of Italy's most promising defenders for several years, although his progress has been interrupted by significant fitness problems.

Scalvini missed substantial periods after a serious knee injury and later underwent shoulder surgery, while further hamstring and adductor problems restricted his appearances last season. Even so, his technical qualities and physical profile have continued to attract Premier League interest.

Tottenham's interest is particularly notable given the amount of defensive work the club completed during the summer.

Roberto De Zerbi's side brought in Marcos Senesi, Jan Paul van Hecke and Tosin Adarabioyo, while Andy Robertson was also added to strengthen the wider defensive unit. The club nevertheless remain attentive to opportunities in the market.

Atalanta make Tottenham's task harder

The biggest complication for Spurs is Scalvini's new contract.

Atalanta have tied the defender down until 2031, strengthening their negotiating position and removing any immediate pressure to sell. That does not necessarily end Premier League interest, but it means any future approach is likely to require a substantial financial commitment.

Earlier reports had suggested Atalanta would want a significant fee to consider selling Scalvini, although the latest reporting does not establish a confirmed asking price following his renewal.

For Tottenham, that makes this a longer-term transfer rather than a deal that appears close to completion.

Spurs face Premier League competition

Tottenham are also not alone in watching the Italian.

Chelsea have been linked with the defender alongside Spurs, while Manchester City and Manchester United have reportedly tracked Scalvini since his teenage years.

That competition could become important if Scalvini eventually becomes available.

For now, however, there is a clear distinction between interest and an imminent transfer. Tottenham have made enquiries and remain attentive to his situation, but there is no reported formal offer on the table.

Scalvini's new Atalanta contract therefore changes the equation rather than ending it. Spurs have already shown they are willing to explore the possibility of signing him, and continued monitoring could leave the door open for another approach in the future.

For Tottenham, the immediate priority may lie elsewhere in the squad, but Scalvini remains a name to watch as the club plans its next phase of defensive recruitment.
