Chelsea Plot Stunning Manu Koné Swap Deal With Jamie Gittens as January Plan Emerges

Chelsea could revive their pursuit of Roma midfielder Manu Koné in January, with a potential deal reportedly involving a surprise swap for Jamie Gittens.

The Blues were unable to land Koné during the summer transfer window despite interest in the France international, but Chelsea could return for the 25-year-old when the market reopens midway through the season.

According to reports, one possible solution could see Gittens move to Roma as part of a deal for Koné, creating a striking player-exchange scenario between the Premier League and Serie A.

It would give Chelsea another opportunity to address a midfield problem they failed to solve during the summer.

Chelsea could go back for Koné

Chelsea's interest in Koné is not new.

The midfielder was among the players considered by the Blues before the summer window closed, but Roma ultimately kept hold of him.

The Guardian reported that Chelsea had explored a move for Koné as they searched for midfield reinforcements following Enzo Fernández's departure to Manchester City.

That need could become even more significant by January if Chelsea continue to struggle for balance in the middle of the pitch.

The club have Moisés Caicedo and Roméo Lavia among their midfield options, while captain Reece James has also been used centrally. But Chelsea's options were tested heavily in the opening weeks of the campaign.

The Jamie Gittens twist

The most intriguing part of the latest proposal is the potential involvement of Gittens.

Rather than simply paying Roma's asking price for Koné, Chelsea could reportedly explore sending their winger in the opposite direction.

Gittens only joined Chelsea in 2025 after establishing himself at Borussia Dortmund, making the possibility of his involvement in a January deal particularly eye-catching.

The England Under-21 international is a player Chelsea invested heavily in, so including him in negotiations would represent a significant decision.

For Roma, however, the prospect of acquiring a young attacking player with Premier League and Champions League experience could make the structure of the deal attractive.

Why Chelsea want Koné

Koné would offer Chelsea something they have been missing since Fernández's departure: energy, physicality and defensive presence in midfield.

The France international is capable of operating as a powerful central midfielder and has experience in both the Bundesliga and Serie A.

Chelsea's midfield difficulties were exposed during their 2-1 defeat to Arsenal, with the Blues struggling to control the centre of the pitch. The Guardian noted that the club had already been looking at Koné as a possible midfield solution.

Clinton Morrison also identified Koné as one of the midfielders Chelsea tried to sign during the summer, arguing that the club were left short in that position after failing to complete the deal.

That makes a January return particularly logical if the problem continues.

But this is not a done deal

Despite the eye-catching swap proposal, there is currently no indication that Chelsea and Roma have agreed a deal.

The reported scenario should therefore be viewed as a potential January structure rather than an imminent transfer.

Chelsea would first have to decide whether they are prepared to sacrifice Gittens, while Roma would need to be convinced that the winger represents suitable compensation for allowing Koné to leave.

There would also be financial and contractual details to resolve before any player-exchange arrangement could become reality.

Chelsea's midfield problem could decide everything

The timing could ultimately be crucial.

Chelsea cannot make major changes to their squad until January, meaning Xabi Alonso must work with his current midfield options for the first half of the season.
