Sunderland Handed Brian Brobbey Injury Blow as Xavi Confirms Major Netherlands Decision
Sunderland have been handed a fresh Brian Brobbey injury blow after Netherlands boss Xavi confirmed the striker will play no further part in the current international break.
Brobbey was forced off after just 35 minutes of the Netherlands' 1-1 draw with Germany on Thursday after appearing to suffer a hamstring problem.
The Sunderland striker pulled up while chasing the ball and immediately signalled towards the Netherlands medical staff before being substituted. He was visibly uncomfortable as he made his way from the pitch.
Xavi subsequently confirmed that Brobbey is injured and will be replaced in the Netherlands squad, meaning he will miss Sunday's Nations League meeting with Serbia.
Sunderland now face anxious wait
The immediate concern for Sunderland is the severity of the injury.
There is currently no confirmed timeframe for Brobbey's return, with the striker expected to undergo further assessment before the full extent of the problem becomes clear.
That leaves Régis Le Bris and Sunderland waiting for more information ahead of the club's return to Premier League action.
The timing is particularly frustrating because Brobbey had just produced his best performance since joining Sunderland.
Brobbey had finally found his scoring touch
The Dutchman scored a hat-trick in Sunderland's 5-3 defeat against Manchester City last weekend, becoming the first Sunderland player to score three goals in a Premier League match since Jermain Defoe in 2016.
Brobbey's treble came in less than an hour at the Etihad and earned him the Premier League's Player of the Matchweek award after a fan vote.
It was an important breakthrough after he had failed to score in Sunderland's opening four league matches.
Le Bris had previously insisted he was not concerned about Brobbey's lack of goals, pointing to his performances and growing understanding with his teammates. The striker appeared to answer that patience emphatically against City.
Now Sunderland could be forced to manage without him.
What happens next for Sunderland?
Brobbey's next assessment will be crucial.
Sunderland's next Premier League fixture is not until October 10, when they host Brighton, giving the forward some recovery time. However, whether that is enough will depend entirely on the severity of the hamstring problem.
Brobbey had started all five of Sunderland's Premier League matches before the international break, underlining his importance to Le Bris' attack.
Wilson Isidor could therefore become an important alternative if Brobbey is unavailable when Sunderland return to action.
For now, though, the Black Cats are still waiting for the information that matters most: whether Brobbey is facing a short absence or a longer spell on the sidelines.
His withdrawal from the Netherlands squad confirms there is an injury concern, but it does not yet establish how many Sunderland matches he could miss.
