Leopards on High Alert as Ambani Eyes Title
AFC Leopards coach Fred Ambani wants his revamped side to put pre-season results to one side and instead focus on developing the tactical discipline and consistency needed to mount a serious challenge for the 2026/27 SportPesa League title.
Leopards finished second last season and have since strengthened their squad with several new signings, with Ambani tasked with moulding the new-look team into a side with a distinct playing identity before the competitive campaign gets underway.
For the coach, the key task is creating a team that can remain disciplined and execute its game plan when placed under pressure.
“We want to see our structure, our reaction when we lose the ball, and how quickly we can create opportunities,” Ambani said, explaining why results in friendly matches are not his primary concern.
The pre-season programme has allowed Ambani to gauge how quickly his players are adapting to his tactical approach, particularly during transitions in possession. Team shape, counter-pressing, transitions and creating chances through coordinated movements have been central to his preparations, rather than relying on individual moments of brilliance.
Leopards showed signs of that development on Sunday with a 3-1 friendly victory over Nairobi United at Police Sacco Stadium. Musa Ceesay and Tyson Otieno were on target, while an own goal also contributed to the win.
“We are trying to build a team that understands what we want to do,” Ambani said, stressing that the pre-season fixtures are helping the technical bench assess player combinations and address shortcomings before competitive action begins.
The victory came after an active recruitment period that saw Leopards bring in Uganda Cranes midfielder Taddeo Lwanga, Gambian midfielder Adama Kanteh, striker Ceesay, central defender Robinson Musungu, winger Erick Balecho and Ugandan goalkeeper Tom Ikara.
The influx of talent has also increased competition for starting positions, and Ambani has warned that no player will be selected on reputation alone. Every member of the squad must demonstrate his worth in training and matches. “Nobody should feel that his place is guaranteed because everybody has to earn the shirt,” he said.
That approach will be crucial as Leopards seek to blend their new arrivals into a squad expected to challenge defending champions Gor Mahia and a number of other contenders for the championship.
Despite last season's strong finish, Ambani believes Leopards must approach the new campaign as a fresh challenge. The club will begin its league campaign at home against Bandari between August 29 and 30 before taking on Kenya Police away in the second round.
“We are going for the title,” Ambani said, making clear that Leopards' ambitions extend beyond simply matching their runners-up finish.
At the same time, the coach is wary of allowing the expectations surrounding a title pursuit to distract his players from their performances. His preference is for the squad to treat each fixture as another step towards developing the consistency required over an entire season. “We have started from zero because every season brings new challenges,” he said.
Leopards will have another opportunity to fine-tune their preparations when they face Ugandan giants KCCA FC in an international friendly on Saturday at Ulinzi Sports Complex. Kick-off is at 4pm, with tickets going for Sh200 for terraces and Sh500 for VIP.
“We need to use these games to understand the players and the solutions they can give us,” Ambani said, highlighting the value of the remaining pre-season matches.
The KCCA fixture will give the coach another chance to test his preferred combinations against international opposition before the demands of league football take centre stage.
“Our focus is to be ready when the league starts, because that is where the points will matter,” Ambani said.
