Gor Mahia, Tusker brace for intense Super Cup showdown

Gor Mahia and Tusker FC will get an early opportunity to measure their ambitions when they square off in the FKF Super Cup at Nyayo Stadium on Sunday.

The 3pm encounter pits the 2025/26 SportPesa League champions against the 2026 Mozzart Bet Cup holders, with the opening silverware of the new season up for grabs.

Gor head into the contest on the back of a demanding CECAFA Kagame Cup campaign that saw their run to the final end in disappointment after Rayon Sports secured a 2-1 extra-time victory.

Coach Charles Akonnor believes the tournament provided ideal preparation for the Super Cup and the season ahead.

“I am very delighted that the CECAFA Kagame Cup comes at such a time because it will give the team good preparations ahead of the new season,” Akonnor said.

The competition also gave the Ghanaian tactician an opportunity to assess his new signings, test different combinations and identify areas that require improvement.

Gor maintained their pre-season activity over the weekend, overcoming newly promoted Migori Youth on penalties after a 2-2 draw in normal time. However, the champions have been hit by a number of injury setbacks as they enter the final phase of their preparations.

New captain Sylvester Owino is sidelined with a calf injury, while Samuel Kapen faces an extended spell out after sustaining an ACL injury. Felix Oluoch and Patrick Essombe are also continuing their rehabilitation.

The injuries have forced Akonnor to rethink his defensive options, with Frank Odhiambo and vice-captain Michael Kibwage likely to carry greater responsibility at the back.

Gor have also lost Harambee Stars defender Siraj Mohammed to Sunday's opponents after the player joined Tusker following his loan stint at KCB.

“He just has to be serious in training and do the right thing,” Akonnor said, stressing that competition for places remains open and no player is guaranteed a starting role.

Siraj's recent move adds an extra layer of intrigue to the Super Cup, with the defender potentially coming up against his former teammates just days after switching allegiance.

Akonnor insists, however, that there are no hard feelings over the transfer and respects the player's decision to pursue a fresh challenge.

“When he felt he wanted to leave, I couldn't stand in his way. I want to clarify that I don't have any issue with any player and I don't intend to do so,” he said.

Tusker, meanwhile, arrive with confidence after lifting the Mozzart Bet Cup and embarking on a major squad rebuild under French coach Julien Mette.

The Brewers have brought in Siraj, striker Eric Kapaito, winger Yakeen Muteheli, right-back Eugene Ikutwa and midfielder Chrispinus Otieno. Nine players have departed as Mette works to assemble a squad capable of competing both domestically and in the CAF Confederation Cup.

“We need to build a stronger and deeper squad if we want to compete with Africa's top clubs,” Mette said.

Their pre-season results have been less impressive, with Tusker eliminated in the group stage of the CECAFA Kagame Cup without recording a victory. Mette, however, believes the experience was beneficial despite the disappointing results.

“I urge patience following our early exit because the tournament has fulfilled its primary objective of preparing the team,” Mette said.

The Super Cup will now give Tusker a chance to gauge their progress against the reigning league champions before the competitive campaign gets into full swing.

Mette has concentrated on tactical organisation and integrating his new recruits, with the coach keen to establish a defined playing identity ahead of a season that will include both domestic and continental commitments.

“If I am looking forward to the future. I know this was the type of game we need for our pre-season to be alert and see what the reality is in the CAF Confederation Cup,” he said.

For Gor, Sunday's match is also an important part of their preparations for a CAF Champions League preliminary-round meeting with Egyptian giants Pyramids FC in September.

Akonnor has challenged his players to approach that assignment with confidence, arguing that the right preparation and mentality can help them compete against more established continental opposition.

“Everything is possible,” Akonnor said of the Pyramids challenge.

That mindset will also be tested against Tusker, with both teams eager to begin the season with silverware.

The Super Cup comes just days before the 2026/27 Premier League season begins on August 29, making Sunday's clash an important final test for two sides still putting the finishing touches to their squads.

For Gor, the priority will be building momentum before their continental campaign, while Tusker will use the occasion to assess how far their rebuilding project has progressed.

“We want to use these big matches to understand where we are and what we still need to improve,” Mette said.

With both clubs carrying ambitions beyond domestic football, the Super Cup promises to be more than just a battle for the first trophy of the season. It will also provide an early indication of whether Gor Mahia and Tusker are ready for the challenges ahead.

With the Super Cup serving as a final rehearsal for both clubs, a tactical comparison of Akonnor’s and Mette’s likely approaches could show which side holds the edge.
