Kenneth Walker Stars as Taylor Swift and Tom Cruise Watch Chiefs Make Huge NFL Statement

The blockbuster night at Arrowhead Stadium had plenty of star power in the stands, with Taylor Swift and Hollywood actor Tom Cruise watching from the crowd.

But it was Walker who stole the sporting headlines.

The new Chiefs signing, who was named Super Bowl MVP with the Seattle Seahawks last season, rushed for a career-high 173 yards and scored twice on his Kansas City debut.

Mahomes, meanwhile, made his first appearance since suffering a knee injury in December and also enjoyed a successful return.

The quarterback rushed for Kansas City's opening touchdown before throwing two more as the Chiefs produced a statement performance against the reigning AFC West champions.

Kenneth Walker takes over

There had been plenty of anticipation surrounding Walker's arrival in Kansas City, but his first outing went beyond even the biggest expectations.

The running back repeatedly powered through the Denver defence and helped Kansas City establish control on the ground.

His biggest moment came after half-time when he broke away for a spectacular 60-yard touchdown, giving the Chiefs a 21-7 advantage.

Walker later added another touchdown after catching a misdirection toss from Mahomes, putting Kansas City firmly in command.

His performance was exactly what the Chiefs had hoped for when they brought him in.

Mahomes certainly wasn't surprised.

“I've been saying it all off-season that K9 is going to make a difference,” Mahomes said.

“That offensive line and K9, they took over the game. It went really well.”

Mahomes makes successful return

Mahomes' return was another major storyline.

The Chiefs quarterback had not played since his knee injury in December, but he looked increasingly comfortable as the game progressed.

He completed 15 of 27 passes for 184 yards and threw touchdown passes to Walker and Rashee Rice.

He also ran for a 15-yard touchdown in the first half.

There were some signs of rust, including an interception in the third quarter, but Mahomes ultimately helped guide Kansas City to a convincing victory.

With Walker now providing another major weapon in the running game, the Chiefs could have a different look offensively this season.

Broncos unable to keep pace

Denver initially threatened to make the game competitive after levelling the scores in the first quarter.

But Bo Nix and the Broncos offence struggled to cope once Kansas City's defence began applying pressure.

Nix was sacked four times and intercepted once as Denver struggled to sustain drives.

The Broncos finished with 176 total yards, while Kansas City piled up 220 rushing yards alone.

It was a difficult night for a Denver team that won the AFC West last season, ending Kansas City's remarkable run of nine consecutive divisional titles.

Travis Kelce makes more NFL history

There was also another significant milestone for Kansas City.

Travis Kelce moved into second place on the NFL's all-time receiving-yardage list for tight ends after producing a 59-yard reception.

The three-time Super Bowl winner now has 13,073 receiving yards for his career.

Only former Chiefs star Tony Gonzalez sits above him, with 15,127 yards.

Kelce therefore continues to close in on one of the most significant records in NFL tight-end history.

Taylor Swift and Tom Cruise add star power

Away from the action, Arrowhead had another reason to attract attention.

Swift, who is married to Kelce, watched from the stands alongside Cruise as the Chiefs began their campaign in emphatic fashion.

Their presence added another layer to an already high-profile opening night, but the performance on the field ensured that the biggest story remained Kansas City's football.

Walker delivered a career night, Mahomes returned from injury and Kelce moved another step closer to Gonzalez.

Chiefs send warning to the AFC West

Beating Denver was particularly significant given what happened last season.

The Broncos ended Kansas City's nine-year reign as AFC West champions, making them one of the teams the Chiefs will be most eager to overcome this season.

On this evidence, Kansas City have made their intentions clear.

Walker looks ready to make an immediate impact, Mahomes is back and the Chiefs have plenty of firepower around them.
