Kenneth Walker III Explodes on Chiefs Debut as Kansas City Hammer Broncos 31-10

The free-agent signing, who arrived after winning Super Bowl MVP honours with the Seattle Seahawks in February, produced a career-high 173 rushing yards and scored two total touchdowns as Kansas City returned to winning form.

Patrick Mahomes also marked his return from a serious knee injury with a composed performance, throwing touchdown passes to Walker and Rashee Rice while adding a 15-yard rushing score of his own.

The Chiefs ultimately ran away with the contest, rushing for 220 yards while their defence repeatedly disrupted Denver quarterback Bo Nix.

Walker announces himself in Kansas City

Walker wasted little time showing exactly what he could bring to the Chiefs' offence.

He repeatedly converted difficult short-yardage situations before producing the play of the night early in the second half.

On fourth-and-1, Walker bounced the run to the left, avoided a diving Riley Moss and suddenly had open field in front of him.

The result was a spectacular 60-yard touchdown, pushing Kansas City's advantage to 21-7.

At that point, Walker had already rushed for 165 yards — more than Denver's entire offence, which had managed 113 total yards.

His night was not finished.

Walker later caught a misdirection toss from Mahomes and followed his blockers into the end zone early in the fourth quarter to give the Chiefs a commanding 31-10 lead.

It was the perfect introduction for a player expected to add another explosive dimension to Kansas City's offence.

Mahomes gets back to business

Mahomes was playing his first game since suffering a season-ending knee injury in December and showed some early rust.

The Chiefs quarterback completed 15 of 27 passes for 184 yards, with one interception, but also produced three touchdowns — two through the air and one on the ground.

His connection with Walker immediately gives Kansas City another dangerous weapon, while his touchdown pass to Rashee Rice further underlined the options available to the Chiefs' offence.

Mahomes' interception did briefly give Denver an opportunity.

Brandon Jones picked off a pass intended for Xavier Worthy after Mahomes threw from his own end zone, returning the ball to the Kansas City five-yard line.

But the Broncos could not capitalise.

Denver lost eight yards across three plays before settling for a 31-yard Wil Lutz field goal.

Chiefs defence overwhelms Denver

While Walker grabbed the headlines, Kansas City's defence played a major role in the victory.

Nix struggled throughout the contest as heat, wind and humidity affected the Broncos quarterback at different stages.

He completed 17 of 28 passes for just 131 yards and threw a first-quarter touchdown to Evan Engram, but the Chiefs consistently applied pressure.

Kansas City recorded four sacks and a fumble recovery, while Nix was intercepted on Denver's opening possession.

He also lost another fumble in the third quarter when Chris Jones recovered at Denver's 34-yard line.

The Chiefs limited Denver to only 176 total yards and nine first downs, with the Broncos converting just two of 12 third-down attempts.

Travis Kelce makes NFL history

The victory also featured another significant milestone for Kansas City.

Travis Kelce moved into second place all-time among NFL tight ends for receiving yards after catching a 59-yard pass from Mahomes.

That reception took Kelce past Jason Witten's 13,046 career receiving yards.

Kelce finished the night with three catches for 71 yards, taking his career total to 13,073 receiving yards.

Only former Chiefs and Falcons tight end Tony Gonzalez remains ahead of him, with 15,127 yards.

Kelce therefore still has more than 2,000 yards to make up if he is to claim the all-time record.

Denver left searching for answers

The Broncos struggled to generate anything consistently against Kansas City's defence.

Denver did get the opening touchdown, but the offence became increasingly difficult to watch as Nix's mistakes mounted.

His early interception came on just the third play from scrimmage, while his second fumble handed Kansas City another opportunity.

Rookie Mansoor Delane, the sixth overall pick in the 2026 draft, made the interception on that opening drive but later left the game with a shoulder injury and did not return.

It was ultimately a night where Denver could not match Kansas City's physicality on either side of the ball.

Chiefs send an early warning

For Kansas City, the biggest takeaway may be the sheer number of positives.

Walker produced a career-best rushing performance on his debut, Mahomes successfully returned from injury, the defence dominated Denver and Kelce moved another step up the NFL's all-time receiving charts.

After a difficult start, the Chiefs now have plenty of reasons to believe they are beginning to find their rhythm.

And if Walker's debut is anything to go by, Kansas City may have added another devastating weapon to an offence already led by one of the NFL's biggest stars.
