Gavin Bazunu Backed to Rediscover His Best at Bolton After Southampton Nightmare

The 24-year-old goalkeeper joined the Whites during the final stages of the transfer window, strengthening Steven Schumacher’s goalkeeping options and setting up competition with Jack Bonham.

Irish football expert Ronan Calvert believes the move could provide Bazunu with exactly the fresh start he needs after injuries and inconsistent form disrupted his progress at Southampton.

Having watched Bazunu throughout his 22 appearances for the Republic of Ireland, Calvert insists Bolton supporters should not overlook the goalkeeper’s considerable ability.

Bazunu has something to prove at Bolton

Bazunu arrived at Southampton in 2022 after developing through the Manchester City academy and impressing during loan spells with Rochdale and Portsmouth.

The Saints reportedly paid around £12 million to sign him, with the goalkeeper stepping into Premier League football at a relatively young age.

However, his time at St Mary’s did not develop as expected.

Bazunu lost his place in the Southampton pecking order amid a combination of form concerns and injuries, while subsequent loan spells at Standard Liege and Stoke City gave him opportunities to rebuild his confidence.

Calvert believes Bolton could now offer him the environment required to do exactly that.

“While Bolton fans will have read mixed reviews about Gavin Bazunu in recent days, I don't think it should be lost on them how brilliant he can be when fully fit and firing,” Calvert told Betway.

Ireland performances show what Bolton can get

Bazunu has already demonstrated his quality at international level.

Calvert has followed all 22 of his Republic of Ireland appearances and believes the goalkeeper was frequently among the country's best performers during his strongest period.

“As someone who has watched all of Bazunu's 22 Ireland caps - where he was often Ireland's best player - I can confidently say he is someone with a huge amount of ability,” he said.

That potential was also recognised by Manchester City and Southampton, who both saw enough in Bazunu to invest in him during his development.

His style could also make him an attractive fit for Schumacher's side.

Bazunu offers more than shot-stopping

Calvert highlighted Bazunu's ability with the ball at his feet as one of his major strengths.

The goalkeeper is comfortable being proactive in possession and can contribute to the build-up through a range of distribution options.

“His proactive playing style makes him a crucial part of teams' build-up play,” Calvert said.

“He is someone with an excellent range of passing and places big emphasis on tempo and his choice of distribution, be it throws, short passes or long searching balls.”

For Bolton, that could give Schumacher another option when building attacks from the back.

Confidence could unlock his shot-stopping

Bazunu's shot-stopping has attracted criticism during difficult spells with Southampton and Stoke, but Calvert believes there is a significant difference between the goalkeeper when he is struggling for confidence and the player at his best.

“His shot-stopping, although criticised by Southampton and Stoke fans in recent campaigns, is elite when he is confident and fully fit.”

Calvert pointed to Bazunu's performances for Ireland as evidence, recalling numerous occasions when he produced saves that appeared likely to prevent goals.

The major concern, he says, has been the impact of injuries over the past two years.

Bolton gives Bazunu a chance to start again

Bazunu's career trajectory changed considerably after an excellent period with Ireland between 2021 and 2024.

His performances for the national team had previously seen him establish himself ahead of Caoimhin Kelleher, but he subsequently lost his Ireland place to the Liverpool goalkeeper.

Now, Bolton provides Bazunu with an opportunity to rebuild.

Calvert believes the move could work for both player and club.

“Now at Bolton, however, I suspect this move will work out brilliantly for all parties,” he said.

“This is a fresh start at a good club for Bazunu, who has needed something like this since being thrown into the unforgiving arena of Premier League football in a struggling Saints side.”

Can Bazunu become a Bolton favourite?

There is no guarantee that Bazunu will immediately rediscover the form that made him such an important figure for Ireland, particularly after his recent injury problems.

But Calvert believes Bolton have a strong record of helping players rebuild their careers and sees genuine potential for the goalkeeper to become a popular figure at the Toughsheet Stadium.

“Bolton have a fantastic track record of rehabilitating such players and while all caveats apply, I expect the potential that Manchester City saw in him aged 16 to shine through at the Toughsheet Stadium where he could quickly become a fan favourite.”

The ultimate prize could be even greater if Bazunu can consistently reproduce his best form.

“Perform like he did for three years with Ireland and he has the makings of a potential Whites club hero,” Calvert added.

What happens next?

Bazunu now faces the task of translating that potential into performances for Bolton.

Competition with Bonham means his place will not simply be guaranteed, but the move gives him a new environment and another opportunity to establish himself.

After losing ground at Southampton and then seeing his Ireland position taken by Kelleher, Bolton represents a chance for Bazunu to reset his career.

If he can stay fit and rediscover the confidence that characterised his best performances for Ireland, the Whites may yet have a goalkeeper capable of becoming much more than a short-term addition.
