Cardiff City Linked With Will Smallbone as Brian Barry-Murphy Targets Ryan Wintle Replacement

According to Sky Sports, the Bluebirds are among the clubs interested in the Republic of Ireland international, who has been without a club since leaving Southampton at the end of June.

Sheffield United and Burnley are also reportedly interested in the 26-year-old, meaning Cardiff could face competition if they decide to pursue a deal.

Cardiff still looking for Wintle solution

Smallbone’s availability comes at an interesting time for Cardiff.

The Bluebirds have not fully replaced Wintle since the former club captain departed, despite adding Krystian Bielik to Barry-Murphy’s squad last month.

Wintle was named Cardiff’s player of the year last season and provided important defensive security and balance in the centre of midfield.

His performances helped earn him an opportunity back in the Premier League, with Smallbone making 18 appearances for Southampton during the 2024/25 campaign.

He subsequently moved to Millwall on loan last season.

That spell was disrupted by injury, restricting him to 10 Championship appearances at The Den, but Smallbone evidently did enough to attract interest after becoming a free agent.

The midfielder has also established himself at international level, earning 15 senior Republic of Ireland caps.
