FIFA Complete Nigeria Fact-Finding Mission as Major NFF Decision Looms

The FIFA delegation held meetings with officials from the National Sports Commission (NSC), the interim leadership of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and several football stakeholders in Abuja.

However, neither the NSC nor the interim NFF leadership has publicly disclosed details of the discussions, leaving Nigerian football waiting to discover what recommendations or decisions could follow from the visit.

Why FIFA became involved

Nigerian football has been plunged into turmoil since last month following the resignation of former NFF president Ibrahim Musa Gusau and members of his executive board.

The immediate pressure came after the Super Falcons failed to qualify for the 2027 FIFA Women's World Cup in Brazil.

Nigeria had reached every previous edition of the Women's World Cup since the inaugural tournament in 1991, while the Super Falcons are also 10-time WAFCON champions.

The country's men's teams have experienced their own qualification problems, with the Super Eagles missing the 2022 and 2026 World Cups. The Golden Eaglets and Flying Eagles also failed to qualify for their respective global tournaments during the Gusau administration.

FIFA wanted more than a meeting in Zurich

Following the departure of the Gusau-led board, interim NFF leadership under Dr Emmanuel Ikpeme joined NSC chairman Shehu Dikko, NSC director general Bukola Olopade and former NFF president and FIFA Council member Amaju Pinnick for a meeting with FIFA president Gianni Infantino in Zurich.

FIFA subsequently made clear that the initial discussions were not enough and that an on-the-ground assessment in Nigeria was required.

That led to the latest two-day mission in Abuja.

The delegation met the NSC, including Dikko, before holding talks with the interim NFF leadership on Tuesday. FIFA officials also met other stakeholders involved in Nigerian football.

Segun Odegbami reveals what happened behind closed doors

Former Nigeria captain and football administrator Segun Odegbami, who attended one of the meetings, described FIFA's intervention as an opportunity to address the country's long-running administrative problems.

Odegbami said the discussions were conducted cordially and that FIFA appeared to have a detailed understanding of the challenges facing Nigerian football.

He also said the meetings had given FIFA additional information that could strengthen its eventual report and help determine the next stage of the reform process.

Could FIFA appoint a Normalisation Committee?

One of the key questions now surrounding Nigerian football is whether FIFA could become directly involved in restructuring the administration of the game.

Odegbami said reforms were coming regardless of whether FIFA ultimately decided to establish a Normalisation Committee.
