Manchester United Receive Luke Shaw Boost But Michael Carrick Still Faces Five-Man Injury List
Manchester United have been handed a potential injury boost ahead of Wednesday night's Carabao Cup clash with Brighton, with Luke Shaw closing in on a return — but Michael Carrick still has a sizeable list of unavailable players to contend with.

United host Brighton at Old Trafford looking to respond immediately after Sunday's controversial 1-0 Manchester derby defeat to Manchester City.

Shaw has missed the last two matches with a muscle issue, but the England international is now back in contention and could feature against the Seagulls.

That would give Carrick an important option at left-back after Patrick Dorgu was required to fill the position during Shaw's absence.

Luke Shaw provides Manchester United boost

Shaw's possible return is the clearest positive in United's latest team news.

The defender has been dealing with muscle tightness and remains a fitness doubt rather than a guaranteed starter, but he has a chance of being involved against Brighton.

Carrick could choose to ease Shaw back into action rather than immediately hand him a full 90 minutes, particularly with Manchester United travelling to Fulham in the Premier League on Sunday.

His return would nevertheless give United greater flexibility.

Dorgu could move further forward if Shaw is available, potentially allowing Carrick to rotate his attacking options while protecting the returning defender.

Five Manchester United players remain unavailable

The positive news on Shaw comes alongside a lengthy injury list.

Carlos Baleba remains sidelined with an ankle problem after joining United from Brighton during the summer. The midfielder is reportedly targeting a return after the international break.

Amad Diallo is also unavailable with an ankle injury and has yet to feature this season.

Matthijs de Ligt remains out with his long-term back problem, although he has returned to training and is moving closer to a first-team comeback.

Manuel Ugarte is continuing his recovery from a knee injury, while goalkeeper Tom Heaton remains sidelined with a hamstring problem.

United therefore still have five players unavailable even if Shaw is cleared to play.

De Ligt is getting closer

There is also encouraging news regarding de Ligt.

The Netherlands international has not played since the end of 2025 after suffering a significant back problem that eventually required surgery.

He has now returned to training and is progressing towards a first-team return, although Wednesday's match against Brighton is expected to come too soon for him.

His eventual return could be particularly important for Carrick given United's defensive workload.

For now, however, Leny Yoro and Ayden Heaven are among the options available should the manager decide to rotate his established centre-backs for the cup tie.

Carrick expected to rotate against Brighton

The Brighton fixture provides Carrick with an opportunity to change his team after the derby defeat.

Karl Darlow could replace Senne Lammens in goal, while Noussair Mazraoui is another candidate to come into the defence.

Carrick could also rest established centre-backs Lisandro Martinez and Harry Maguire, with Yoro and Heaven possible replacements.

Further forward, Amad's absence leaves United short of natural options on the right.

Bryan Mbeumo could therefore be asked to start again, while teenage winger Shea Lacey is another possibility.

Benjamin Sesko is also pushing for a start after making an impact in limited opportunities, with Matheus Cunha potentially given a rest.

Brighton arrive without Baleba

There is an added twist to Baleba's absence.

The midfielder joined Manchester United from Brighton during the summer, but he will not be able to face his former club at Old Trafford because of his ankle injury.

Brighton have confirmed there are no new major injury concerns ahead of the match, although Femi Azeez is being assessed on a day-to-day basis.

The Seagulls also arrive in strong form after a 5-0 victory over Coventry City.

What happens next for Manchester United?

United's immediate priority is to bounce back from the derby defeat, but Wednesday's cup tie also gives Carrick an opportunity to manage his squad carefully.

Shaw's potential return provides a welcome boost, while de Ligt's progress offers another encouraging sign for the weeks ahead.

But Baleba, Amad, Ugarte, Heaton and de Ligt remain unavailable for Brighton.

With Fulham waiting on Sunday before the international break, Carrick will have to balance the need for a response at Old Trafford with the longer-term fitness of his squad.

For now, Luke Shaw's possible return is the headline positive — but Manchester United's injury list remains a significant consideration.
