Marcelo Gallardo Lands Huge New Job as Ecuador Hand Argentine Coach 2030 World Cup Mission

The Ecuadorian Football Federation has handed the 50-year-old his first job in international management, with Gallardo tasked with taking a talented Ecuador side to the next level on the global stage.

He replaces Sebastian Beccacece, who led Ecuador at this summer's World Cup.

Gallardo arrives with an extraordinary club record behind him, having won 14 trophies across two spells with Argentine giants River Plate, including two Copa Libertadores titles.

Now, he faces an entirely different challenge.

Gallardo takes first international job

Gallardo left River Plate in February following his second spell in charge of the club.

His success in Argentina established him as one of South America's most respected coaches, but the Ecuador role represents a new chapter after years of club management.

It also gives him a long-term project.

Rather than being appointed solely for the next World Cup cycle, Gallardo has been handed a mandate stretching through the 2030 World Cup.

Ecuador clearly see the Argentine as the man capable of turning their existing potential into major international success.

“We sought out Marcelo Gallardo for what he has won, but above all for what he represents,” Ecuadorian Football Federation president Francisco Egas said.

“We have a generation that competes at the highest level.

“We have talent, structure and ambition, and we believe this national team is ready to take the next step.”

Ecuador already have a strong foundation

Gallardo is not inheriting a team starting from scratch.

Ecuador reached the knockout stage of this summer's World Cup, producing one of the tournament's notable results by upsetting Germany in the group stage before their campaign ended with a 2-0 defeat to Mexico in the Round of 32.

The challenge for Gallardo will be turning that foundation into sustained progress.

The federation believes the combination of talent, infrastructure and ambition gives Ecuador the platform to compete at the highest level.

Gallardo's appointment is therefore as much about what comes next as it is about the results already achieved.

A completely different challenge for Gallardo

Managing a national team will require Gallardo to adapt to a very different environment.

At River Plate, he had the opportunity to work with his squad every day and build detailed tactical structures over an entire season.

With Ecuador, preparation time will be considerably more limited, making his ability to communicate ideas quickly and maximise the strengths of his players particularly important.

That makes the long-term nature of the appointment significant.

Gallardo now has several years to establish his methods, develop the squad and build towards the 2030 World Cup.

South Korea provides first test

Gallardo's Ecuador tenure will begin with a fixture against South Korea on September 24.

It will provide the first opportunity to see how the former River Plate boss approaches international football and how quickly he can begin implementing his ideas.

For Ecuador, the appointment represents an ambitious statement.

For Gallardo, it is the first chance to prove that the success that made him a legend at River Plate can translate to the international stage.
