UEFA Make Powerful Champions League Statement as Europe Stands With Nepal After Devastating Floods

Ahead of matches throughout the opening gameweek, teams stood together behind banners carrying the message “You are not alone Nepal”, marking the beginning of a week-long tribute organised by UEFA.

The gesture will be seen before all 18 matches in the first gameweek of the Champions League, giving the disaster a huge international platform as Europe’s biggest clubs begin their campaigns.

Champions League clubs stand with Nepal

The first six matches of the opening gameweek all featured the tribute.

Players and thousands of supporters at Club Brugge vs Aston Villa, AEK Athens vs Linzer ASK, Porto vs Manchester City, Real Madrid vs Inter Milan, Borussia Dortmund vs Villarreal and Lille OSC vs Real Betis stood in silence before kick-off.

UEFA had announced on Monday that European football would honour those affected by the flash floods that struck Nepal on August 26.

The governing body confirmed that a moment of silence and the solidarity banner would be used before every Champions League fixture during the week.

UEFA president Aleksander Čeferin said the entire European football family would stand together to offer condolences and support to the people of Nepal.

The message comes as Nepal continues to deal with the aftermath of the disaster, with hundreds of people confirmed dead and thousands more reported missing following flooding along the Bhotekoshi and Trishuli river basins.

More Champions League tributes still to come

The tribute will continue throughout the rest of the opening gameweek.

On Wednesday, Barcelona vs Feyenoord at Camp Nou and VfB Stuttgart vs Viking at MHPArena will also feature moments of silence.

Thursday brings another major group of fixtures, including Napoli vs Arsenal, Liverpool vs Atlético Madrid, PSG vs Slovan Bratislava and Sporting vs Galatasaray.

The same gesture will also be observed before Fenerbahçe vs Roma and PSV vs Shakhtar Donetsk later on Thursday.

The first gameweek concludes early Friday with Bayern Munich vs Bodø/Glimt, Slavia Praha vs Lens and Como vs RB Leipzig.

Manchester United will also return to the Champions League at Old Trafford against Sabah, with the three-time European champions back in the competition after two seasons away.

Arsenal also step up support for Nepal

The Champions League tribute comes alongside separate efforts from clubs to support those affected by the disaster.

Arsenal have announced that the Arsenal Foundation is working with charity partner Save the Children on a dedicated fundraising initiative for communities affected by the floods.

The club expressed its support for families who have lost loved ones, people still waiting for news of missing relatives and emergency teams working in difficult conditions.

That makes Arsenal's Champions League fixture against Napoli on Thursday particularly notable, with the match forming part of a wider week in which European football is using its enormous global audience to keep attention on Nepal.
