Rangers Make John Souttar Decision After Clinton Nsiala Completes Ibrox Exit

Nsiala has officially joined Sharjah FC from Rangers, with the club confirming the transfer on Wednesday after the defender fell out of Derek McInnes' plans.

The French defender arrived at Rangers from AC Milan in 2024 but struggled to establish himself in the first team. He did not feature for McInnes this season and has now secured a permanent move to the United Arab Emirates.

His departure naturally raises questions over whether Souttar could now be handed another opportunity at Ibrox.

However, the latest indications suggest the Scotland international's situation remains unchanged.

Souttar still expected to leave Rangers

Souttar has been outside McInnes' plans since the beginning of the season and was given permission to look for a new club.

A proposed move to Aris Thessaloniki collapsed after the two sides failed to reach an agreement before the Greek transfer deadline, leaving the 29-year-old still on Rangers' books.

That development initially created the possibility of Souttar returning to the first-team picture, particularly with Rangers losing another central defender.

McInnes had previously indicated that if a move failed to materialise, Souttar could potentially return to the fold.

But that position now appears to have changed.

Recent reporting indicates Rangers do not intend to extend Souttar's contract beyond the current season, while the defender is unlikely to add to his Rangers appearance tally before his deal expires.

That means Nsiala's departure has not automatically changed the club's plans for Souttar.

Rangers now have fewer defensive options

The situation does, however, leave McInnes with fewer established centre-back options.

Emmanuel Fernandez and Olwethu Makhanya have been preferred at the heart of the defence, while Ben Godfrey provides another senior option.

Nsiala was another player available for that position but was unable to force his way into the manager's plans.

With his departure now confirmed, Rangers have lost one more defensive body at a time when the fixture schedule is becoming increasingly demanding.

That could make Souttar's situation one of the more interesting squad-management issues at Ibrox in the months ahead.

The club may still prefer to move on from the Scotland international, but retaining an experienced defender while carrying a relatively small group of senior centre-backs creates an obvious tension.

January could become important

For now, Souttar remains a Rangers player.

His contract runs until the end of the season, with the club previously holding an option for an additional year.

The immediate question is therefore not whether Rangers can simply replace him after Nsiala's departure, but whether McInnes is prepared to use a player who has been told that his long-term future lies elsewhere.

If Souttar remains outside the first-team plans, Rangers could revisit the situation when the January transfer window opens.

For the moment, though, Nsiala's completed transfer has not triggered a U-turn on Souttar.

Instead, Rangers appear set to continue with their existing plan: Nsiala has moved on, while Souttar remains at Ibrox but with his long-term future seemingly elsewhere.
