Cardiff City Given Major Bolton Warning as Trotters Look to End Four-Game Losing Run

Brian Barry-Murphy's Bluebirds face Steven Schumacher's newly promoted Trotters in a 12:30pm kick-off, with both sides having plenty at stake despite Bolton's contrasting starts to the campaign.

Bolton opened their return to the second tier with a 2-1 victory over Preston North End but have since lost four consecutive Championship matches.

Cardiff, meanwhile, are still waiting for their first league win as they look to build momentum following their return to the Championship.

Bolton's Championship return has taken a sharp turn

Bolton secured promotion last season after finishing fifth in League One before overcoming Bradford City in the play-off semi-finals and beating Stockport County 4-1 at Wembley.

It marked their return to the Championship for the first time since the 2018/19 season.

Schumacher, who previously managed Plymouth Argyle and Stoke City, has overseen that rise since taking charge in January 2025.

The 42-year-old now faces a very different challenge: keeping Bolton in the second tier.

The Trotters were particularly active during the summer, bringing in 14 new players.

Among their arrivals were former Rangers defender Ben Davies, Wrexham pair Ryan Hardie and Lewis Brunt, and goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu from Southampton.

Bazunu is a familiar figure to Barry-Murphy, having previously worked with the Cardiff boss during their time at Manchester City.

Four straight defeats have changed the picture

Bolton could hardly have wished for a better start when Dalby and Thierry Gale secured a 2-1 victory over Preston in front of a near-capacity home crowd.

But the momentum quickly disappeared.

A goalless draw away to Queens Park Rangers was followed by a 1-0 home defeat against fellow promoted side Lincoln City.

Bolton then suffered a dramatic 3-2 defeat at Sheffield United despite twice taking the lead.

Xavier Simons scored after just one minute, while Sam Dalby restored Bolton's advantage in the second half. On both occasions, United responded almost immediately before Romelle Donovan struck in stoppage time.

Things became even worse at The Den, where Millwall ran out 4-0 winners.

Bolton showed more attacking threat against West Ham United in midweek and even turned the game around after conceding first.

Ethan Erhahon and Rúben Rodrigues put the hosts ahead, but Konstantinos Mavropanos and a Jarrod Bowen double ultimately gave the visitors a 3-2 win.

Bolton's competitive record now reads:

That makes Saturday particularly interesting for Cardiff. Bolton have shown they can compete in games, but their results have fallen away sharply since that opening-day victory.

Cardiff will know this fixture can be decided by fine margins

The recent history between the clubs also points towards the importance of home advantage.

The two teams have met 11 times since the turn of the century, with Cardiff winning only twice at Bolton's home ground.

The first came in the 2014 FA Cup, when Fraizer Campbell scored the only goal of the game.

Cardiff's other victory came in December 2015, when Tony Watt, Scott Malone and Anthony Pilkington were all on target in a memorable 3-2 win.

Bolton, meanwhile, have won only once at Cardiff City Stadium during that period — a 3-0 victory in April 2015.

Last season's meetings add another layer

The clubs also know each other well from last season's League One promotion battle.

Bolton claimed the first bragging rights when Amario Cozier-Duberry curled home a stoppage-time winner in October, settling what had been a largely uneventful contest.

Cardiff got their revenge in the return fixture — and did so at a hugely important moment in their promotion campaign.

Omari Kellyman and Chris Willock scored second-half goals to give Barry-Murphy's side a 2-0 victory.

That result proved significant as Cardiff moved clear of one of their promotion rivals before completing their own push towards promotion seven days later.

Now the circumstances are different.

Both clubs have stepped up into the Championship, but while Bolton are trying to recover from four straight defeats, Cardiff are still searching for the result that will kick-start their own campaign.

A new-look Bolton squad awaits Cardiff

Schumacher made major changes to his squad over the summer following promotion.

Goalkeepers: Jack Bonham, Nathan Broome, David Harrington, Gavin Bazunu, Luke Hutchinson.

Defenders: Chris Forino, Lewis Brunt, Ben Davies, Akin Famewo, Eoin Toal, Gaizka Larrazabal, Max Conway, Luca Stephenson, Sam Inwood.

Midfielders: Xavier Simons, Kyliane Dong, Josh Sheehan, David Watson, Samuel Iling-Junior, Ethan Erhahon, Jayden Nelson, Rúben Rodrigues, Atsuki Ito.

Forwards: Thelonius Bair, Sam Dalby, Thierry Gale, John McAtee, Ryan Hardie.

Several members of last season's promotion-winning squad have also departed, including Cozier-Duberry, Mason Burstow and Johnny Kenny, while Marcus Forss returned to Middlesbrough.

That means Saturday's meeting will offer another test of how quickly Schumacher's revamped squad can adapt to Championship football.

What happens next?

Cardiff's priority is straightforward: find the win that has so far escaped them.

Bolton's task is almost the mirror image. Schumacher needs his side to rediscover the confidence shown against Preston before four consecutive defeats become a much bigger concern.

With both teams having promotion memories from last season but very different challenges in the Championship, Saturday's meeting promises to be a significant early test.

And for Cardiff, victory would carry an added incentive: another positive result against a Bolton side that was one of their closest promotion rivals just a few months ago.
