Burnley Suffer Major Dastan Satpayev Blow as Chelsea Loanee Faces Weeks Out

The Chelsea loanee has been one of Burnley's standout performers since arriving at Turf Moor and was a significant absence as the Clarets suffered a 2-1 defeat to Bristol City on Saturday.

Satpayev, 18, was forced off during the closing stages of Wednesday night's match against Middlesbrough after appearing to clutch his hamstring.

Burnley boss Hayen has now confirmed the Kazakhstan international faces a spell out.

"Yes, he will be out for a few weeks, unfortunately," Hayen said.

Burnley lose key attacking option

Satpayev's absence comes at a particularly difficult moment for Burnley.

The teenager has quickly established himself as an important player for the Clarets, making his injury a significant setback as Hayen attempts to find the right balance between keeping his squad fresh and maintaining consistency.

Hayen suggested Satpayev's workload was a factor, pointing to the player's limited preparation before the season.

"It's one of the signs. Like I said, he had a pre-season but not a proper pre-season," Hayen said.

"We try to push players, try to protect them, and you just have to find that real good balance."

The timing is particularly frustrating given Burnley's current position.

Saturday's defeat to Bristol City saw the Clarets drop to the bottom of the Championship, increasing the pressure on Hayen and making Satpayev's absence even more significant.

Hannibal adds to Burnley's concerns

The injury news did not end with Satpayev.

Hayen also revealed that Hannibal appeared to suffer a problem during Saturday's defeat despite only entering the game as a late substitute.

The midfielder was seen receiving treatment on the pitch at full-time and was holding ice against his hamstring.

"Again, you saw Hannibal having a small injury and this is the situation now," Hayen added.

"If you don't have the fitness…we don't have to blame anyone, it's just the situation how it is."

Burnley could therefore be facing another selection headache just as they attempt to respond to their latest defeat.

Hayen's rotation comes under scrutiny

Hayen was also defending his decision to make six changes for the Bristol City match.

Connor Roberts, Anel Ahmedhodzic and Jacob Bruun Larsen were among those left on the bench as the Burnley manager attempted to manage workloads during a demanding period.

Burnley have been dealing with a congested schedule, and Hayen explained that his preference would be to keep a settled side if circumstances allowed.

"I rather want to play with the same players, of course," he said.

"If you have three games [in a week], maybe you change one game and some numbers."

"But you just see that everyone is in a difficult situation now and we try to keep everyone involved, everyone fresh."

The result, however, leaves Burnley bottom of the Championship and facing further disruption to their squad.

Burnley still have a lengthy injury list

There is at least one positive development ahead of Tuesday's trip to Wrexham.

Lucas Pires is expected to return after recovering from concussion and should be available for the match.

But Burnley's injury list remains substantial.

Jordan Beyer, Bashir Humphreys, Josh Cullen, Enock Agyei, Jaydon Banel and Ashley Barnes are all still sidelined, while Satpayev now joins them for the coming weeks.

Hannibal's situation will also need to be assessed following the concern over his hamstring.

Burnley head to Wrexham on Tuesday with their squad already stretched and their league position adding to the pressure.

Satpayev's absence is particularly damaging given his form and growing importance to Hayen's side.

The Clarets now need to find a way to replace one of their most effective performers while also waiting to discover whether Hannibal's problem is serious.

With Burnley sitting bottom of the Championship and the injury list continuing to grow, Hayen's squad-management challenge has just become considerably harder.
